Johannes Itten and his colourwheel

Johannes Itten
Johannes Itten was born in Sudern-Linden at November 11th 1888. He was a Swiss painter. Before he did a lot of educations and started a school in 1925. At 1938 he moved to Amsterdam. After that, he became director of the Kunstwerkbeschule in Zurich . In 1966 he received ‘The Sikkenprijs’ from a Dutch paint factory for the integration of colour and space . Johannes Itten died on May 27th 1967.

The colour circle of Itten

Is based on the subtractive colour system (the mixing of colours). It contains primary colours (blue, red,  yellow) secondary colours  (orange, green, violet) and the tertary colours. You can make secondary colours by mixing two primary colours, and tertary colours by mixing a primary and secondary colour.
